10 women that make us want to start a band

Ever imagined life as a rock star? These talented girls will get you inspired...

All hail the women of rock and roll. From scuzzy indie bands to the best in pop-rock, via folk and indie loveliness, girl power has taken to mean much more among today's music pack.

We've rounded up 10 of our favourite female influencers, from Best Coast's rebellious Bethany Cosentino to the power trio better known as HAIM.

Don't recognise some of the names? Then get pressing play pronto...

1. HAIM (Este, Danielle and Alana Haim)

You'll struggle to flick through an issue of NME without this all-girl trio popping up. The California sisters have mastered the art of hypnotic rock with their funk-pop blend.

2. Bethany Cosentino, Best Coast

LA's beach-loving frontwoman gives sex appeal to Best Coast's surf-rock sound. With an air of Courtney Love about her, say hello to this generation's grunge queen.

3. Alison Mosshart, The Kills and The Dead Weather

Fronting bands with Jamie Hince and Jack White is definitely something to brag about, but it's Alison's pure punk-rock approach that's inspiring us. Don't be surprised to see this Florida singer gracing the fashion pages of Vogue either.

4. Savages (Jehnny Beth, Gemma Thompson, Ayse Hassan, Fay Milton)

Taking lead from the post-punk movement, this London-based quintet is ballsy, riffy and already kicking butt on the live circuit.

5. Lzzy Hale, Halestorm

The al'mighty voice behind American rock band Halestorm, Lzzy is a self-proclaimed 'rock banshee' who's cemented her name in the male-dominated world of heavy metal.

6. Romy Madley Croft, The XX

Hailing from Wandsworth, London, Romy and her indie band The XX are no strangers to chart success, critical acclaim and a little known Mercury Music Prize (won in 2010).

7. Rebecca Taylor, Slow Club

One boy, one girl and one folk-rock duo you don't want to miss out on. Seriously, this Sheffield-based haven't twosome been hailed as 'the next White Stripes' for no reason.

8. Alexis Krauss, Sleigh Bells

Leading the assault on experimental pop, Alexis is the cool New York gal that's blurring the lines between sassy, chic and straight-up cool.

9. Elena Tonra, Daughter

Don't be fooled by Elena's shy disposition, her powerful folk vocals will, with the help of her bandmates, silence rooms and melt hearts.

10. Hayley Williams, Paramore

This list wouldn't be complete with Paramore's pint-sized frontwoman. Her fringe may be so short it looks like it's running away from her face, but Hayley's confident stage presence and honest songwriting is what gets her our vote.
