John Hinckley became obsessed with Jodie Foster after she played a teenage prostitute in Taxi Driver; he even enrolled at Yale at the same time as the actress to be near her. After bombarding her with letters, in 1981 he flew to Washington and shot and wounded Ronald Reagan, who was then US President, along with three members of his staff. Hinckley claimed he had done it to impress Jodie with his "historical deed". And to think we usually get won over by flowers! Hinckley has been in a psychiatric institution in Washington ever since.
