Grab the soap and hand sanitiser, a new study has found that our lovely handbags are a hot and heavy breeding ground for germs and bacteria.
In tests carried out by Initial Washroom Hygiene, leather handbags were found to be the most bacteria-riddled due to their sponginess, while 1 in 5 handbag handles are caked in enough bacteria to be classed as a human health hazard.
Scared yet? Reaching for the bin bags? There's more.
Of all the items in your handbag right now, your hand cream is by far the dirtiest, with more bacteria than the average toilet seat!
So what can be done? Right now this minute? Clean it.
Quite simply, the reason our handbags are such a hazard is that while we'll quite happily wash a frock after wearing it just once, very few of us regularly clean our bags. If ever.
Carrying a hand sanitiser is a great way to slow down cross-contamination, while using antibacterial wipes or specific handbag cleaners and conditioners to give your bag a deep clean is, unsurprisingly, highly recommended.
So what do you think? Seeing your bag in a whole new light?
