These luxurious holidays will blow your mind (and your bank balance)...

Sometimes it's nice to just kick back with a cup of tea and ponder the sort of holidays that are usually saved for millionaires, lottery winners and A-List celebrities. Sigh.

But it's a new year people and there's no reason why we can't save up, dip into the savings account and experience something that is genuinely 'once in a lifetime'. If this sounds like a plan, here are our top 5 bucket list trips for 2013...

2013 - The year of the southern Maldives...

September's opening of Kooddoo Airport in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll area has dramatically opened up the extreme south of the Maldives, so tour operators are predicting a boom in bookings in 2013.

Park Hyatt Hotel

If you're ready to jet off, the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa is one of only four luxury resorts in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll. 400 kilometres south of the capital, Malé, and 56 kilometres north of the Equator, the resort is a pure paradise with an untouched coral reef, beautiful weather and unspoiled beaches. Add in fine dining, a great bar and top quality service and you're pretty much in heaven. Prices from £550 per person, per night.

Take in dramatic ocean-views in your own beach house

Parrot Cay by COMO on the private island resort of Turks & Caicos in the northern Caribbean has just introduced three stylish beach houses that really can boast some of the best ocean views in the world.

Parrot Cay

Perched on the top of a pristine sand bluff, the beach houses are modern and soaked in natural light with private pools and large outdoor decks that lead directly onto the beach. There's also a stunning bedroom, bathroom, outdoor shower and a butler service to keep you feeling pampered.

The villas will be available to rent individually and as a collection of three. Prices start from $3,300 (£2,093).

Sleep in the wilderness at Sasaab

Escape to the wilds of Kenya with the Forty Winks in the Wilderness package at Sasaab Lodge. One of East Africa's most dramatic and luxurious lodges, Sasaab is located in the heart of the Samburu - one of the most untouched and unspoilt parts of Kenya.

Sasaab, Kenya

The peaceful atmosphere will soothe and calm even the most wired bodies and minds, setting the scene for a restful night under the star-filled Kenyan sky. The Forty Winks in the Wilderness package includes everything tired souls need to recover and refresh but it's also totally flexible, so you choose from massages, candlelit dinners, safari drives, camel rides and guided walk.

Package costs from $3950 (£2497) per person based on two sharing including return domestic flights to Samburu, VAT and taxes.

Go on the ultimate 'Sea Safari'

Discover the hidden world of the Eastern Indonesian islands aboard Tiger Blue – a 34-metre traditionally built Phinisi yacht that sails the turquoise Indonesian waters around Komodo, Sumba, Flores, Banda and the Spice Islands.

You'll be able to explore the remote islands, come face-to-face with Komodo Dragons, swim with graceful manta rays and dolphins, climb misty volcanoes and dive amongst some of the best sites in the world.

Tiger Blue

The journey on Tiger Blue is all inclusive, with food prepared by the on board chefs using ingredients collected en route (including fish you have to catch yourself!), diving and water sports are covered and even your laundry will be done for you!

Set departure dates start from $3047 (approx £1,888) per person (based on two sharing) for a seven night journey, including all activities and food.

Live like Tarzan and Jane on a Treehouse holiday

Nestled under the bows of a Gul Mohr tree in Kerela, India, is Tranquil's luxury treehouse, 'Tranquiltree', which rests on three trees 35ft above the ground.

The double bedroom with incredible panoramic views leads out onto a north facing verandah, whilst the bathroom has an incredible six-point shower. Ampersand Travel offer a package to Tranquil from £1148 per person, based on two sharing including return international and domestic flights and three nights at Tranquil on a B&B basis.

The 'View with a Room' room at the Bangkok Tree House in Thailand is also on our bucket list. Perched seven metres in the air, the 'room' is a bamboo platform with a flower strewn futon under a fine canopy, allowing a perfect view of the sky and horizon across the tops of the trees. Ampersand Travel's package is from £963 per person, based on two sharing, with return international flights and transfers and three nights on a B&B basis.
